scanty

i. (adjective) small or insufficient in quantity or amount

Sentence– The workers paid whatever they could out of their scanty wages to their families.

The sentence reminds me of the books by Charles Dickens in which the workers had scanty salaries, so they lived in poor conditions. The word itself reminds me of some words I have used time and again in my class especially while talking about the shortage of water. Can you make any connections to any books or words?
